the DEsire of being Many Group show Berlin 2025 @ Solaris project space

Seven Days of Sitting With You is a seven-channel kinetic sound installation developed in collaboration with Rime Abd Al Majeed, who performed its seven-day vocal ritual. Presented at Solaris, Berlin, in 2025, it formed part of The Desire For Being Many, a collaborative exhibition project exploring feminist solidarity and resistance to anti-feminist and anti-LGBTQIA+ backlash.

Responding to the renewed circulation of an anti-migrant chant in German digital culture, Rime recorded daily responses through speech, breath and silence. Thrän listened to, layered, and spatialized these recordings. Rather than presenting racist speech as spectacle, the work asks how its rhythms persist in embodied memory—and whether repetition can become a practice of listening and refusal rather than renewed violence. This question also turns toward their own practice.

As a white German artist who initiated the framework and shaped its public presentation, Thrän is implicated in the structures the work addresses. Collaboration does not erase our unequal positions or the risks of exposure, extraction, and retraumatization. Care remains a responsibility to negotiate, and the tension we live in. Within the project’s invitation to solidarity, what does it mean to listen together without assuming we bear the same risks—and without asking the person targeted by racism to carry the burden of making others listen?
