TRANSMISSION

Analog Kinetic Projection · Live Mechanical Sound, 2015

TRANSMISSION is an analog light-and-sound installation in which mechanical movement generates both image and sound. Two self-built mechanisms move transparent film across overhead projectors, producing shifting, semi-abstract shadows that travel across the walls of the space. The work approaches transmission as both a physical and perceptual process—an exchange between movement, light, vibration, and space.

The projectors are positioned behind white screens, while the mechanisms continuously feed film across the projection surfaces. Three contact microphones attached to the apparatus amplify the material and mechanical sounds produced in real time: the crackle of the film, the friction of the motors, and the low-frequency drone of the projector fans. Image and sound therefore emerge from the same analog process, making the machinery itself both the source and performer of the work.
